As compositions, Purcell's suites are far easier technically than those of later Baroque composers. Dance movements are short, and the standard suites contain Preludes, Allemandes and Courantes (or the English spelling equivalent), with the odd Sarabande or Hornpipe thrown in for good measure. The second half of the book is taken up with short pieces, often minuets, including some of doubtful authenticity. Although unsophisticated, as works they provide an excellent introduction to the world of Baroque keyboard music: the pieces are of a standard from ABRSM grades 1 - 6. Slightly annoyingly, although the music is well laid out, the book is smaller in height and width from most others meaning it gets lost in the bookcase!
